Around The World

Our environment is for life, not just for Christmas!

A recent article posted by THE INDEPENDENT based on the research by the University of Sheffield, highlighted a solution to the major concern of rising levels of waste due to abandoned Christmas trees which could be saved from landfill and turned into food sweeteners, adhesives, paint and ingredients for medicines reducing the carbon footprint using a new recycling process. So even after the festive season is over, the tree that decorated our home once, could be turned into paint to decorate our home yet again. Here is an exciting article highlighting the discovery to make our environment merry all year round!

Events Attended

Innovate UK Investment Accelerator: We are delighted to participate in the Ocean Plastics Accelerator Competition organised by Sky Ocean Venture. It is focused on social entrepreneurs developing solutions that tackle the environmental crisis of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans. It is a bold new creation that will support breakthrough thinking and invest in promising new ideas and innovations that will help turn off the plastics tap. We will be utilising the investments for further R&D into developing single-use plastic substitutions and packaging innovation, creating a circular economy.

Things we learnt

 “Green Living”

  • Recycling rates among local authorities in England range from 14% to 64% and the amount of all local authority waste sent for recycling fell in 2017-18 to 10.9m tonnes, a 3.5% decrease on the 11.3m tonnes in 2016-17.

  • At present just 43% of the 13 billion plastic bottles sold each year in the UK are recycled, and 700,000 become litter each day eventually increasing marine pollution.

  • Electricity generation in 2018 was the lowest since 1994 with renewable sources including biomass, hydro, solar and wind power responsible for 33% of electricity.

  • The carbon intensity from electricity generation was down 6.8% last year and has more than halved since 2013.

  • Less than 1% of the material used to produce clothing globally is recycled into new clothing, with 12% recycled into other products such as insulation or mattress stuffing.

  • Globally, approximately 1.3 billion tons of food are being discarded each year, turning into food waste which further takes up ⅓ rd amount of trash produced each year.
